There's a tradition on Christmas Eve to light farolitos on the streets around Canyon Road. The lights are simple brown paper bags, weighed down with some sand, with a small candle in the middle. Gorgeous.

The heavy storm here last night removed any last leaves that were still clinging to the trees. Downtown there are some handsome old brick sidewalks. There was something interesting about the regular red bricks, and the organic brown leaf together.

Down at the College of Santa Fe to check out Ricardo Legorreta's great Visual Arts Center. Not the most helpful of light situations while I was there, but a fantastic place to wander around. Like a 22st century monastic site, if that makes any sense.

Ran this shot from the Randall Davey Audobon Center in Santa Fe through a Photoshop Lomo-effect filter. With the wide wide angle and fill-in flash, it was weird enough to warrant it, I reckon.

At the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta yesterday - lots of shots to follow. For a photographer, a balloon festival is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel, but the real challenge is to get something really good, not just pretty good (and pretty). There are a few I like - including this one.

Don Diego and his posse

Early September in Santa Fe, and it's Fiestas time. A lucky man is chosen to represent Don Diego De Vargas, who led the Spanish effort to retake the city in 1692 after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. He also gets a posse, so the whole thing is a bit like the Sopranos meets the 18th century. We've been celebrating the Fiestas since 1712.

The arrival of the green chiles here in New Mexico normally means the start of autumn. But it was really hot down in Corrales yesterday when we picked up our sack, and had it roasted on the spot. Spent the evening watching 'Heroes' and peeling them.

There's not much grass up here in the high desert, but after we saw the obvious joy with which our daughter greeted the green stuff during our last trip to England, we set aside a small area of our yard and put down drought-tolerant grass. Cue the non-appearance of the monsoon rains.

It's patchy but it's plucky, our little square of England. And the heavens opened this afternoon.
